Summer – 2008

Catch the Reading Bug

This was the theme for the 2008 Summer Reading Program.  A wide variety of activities and programs, all centered around the insect theme, was enjoyed by Pre-Schoolers thru Adults.

We started out the summer with a movie (The Ant Bully) and popcorn on May 28.

On June 4, beekeepers Glen Lauppe and Ethan Overbay showed some of the equipment they used and told about the process of harvesting honey.  They had a live beehive to show us too.

On June 11, kids enjoyed a craft day where they got to create their own insects from recyclable materials.

We had a come-and-go craft day on June 18 where we made a butterfly windsock.

Christine McPheter from the Meade County Extension Service helped us learn how to make “buggy” snacks.

On June 26, we had planned on having the Orkin man come and tell us about his job as an exterminator.  Unfortunately, he was unable to make it, so we watched “The Bee Movie” instead!

On June 30, Brian Wendling, a professional juggler entertained us with his awesome abilities.

Kids were in charge of the ANTics on July 2.  We played a variety of bug games inside and outside the library.  On July 9, kids shared their talents with bug jokes, poems, stories and songs during the afternoon.  Some even showed up in bug costumes, and everyone who participated got a prize.

Two different story times were held throughout the summer – one for pre-schoolers and one for the older kids.  The older kids listened to James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl.

Dan Dan the Magic Man came on July 12 to entertain the kids and their families with his magic show.  After the show, we had refreshments and drawings for those who completed the program.
