ASSISTANT CHILDREN’S SERVICES COORDINATOR
JOB DESCRIPTION
Reports To: Director/Head Librarian
Education, Training and Experience Requirements: High School graduate with computer knowledge essential. Experience working with children preferred.
Skills Requirements: The person who fills this position must have -
- good keyboarding skills.
- the ability to operate basic office equipment and Microsoft Office programs.
- knowledge of library filing systems (e.g. the Dewey Decimal System).
- the ability to problem solve and made basic decisions.
Position Summary: The person who fills this position must -

- gain knowledge of library materials and how to organize and relate them to patron’s needs and interests.

Duties and Responsibilities (not inclusive): The person who fills this position must assist the Children’s Services Coordinator in -
- the scheduling, implementation and publicity of all story time events.
- the coordination of the summer reading program.
- keeping a count of children and adults at programs during the year.
- reporting to the Director/Head Librarian.
- decorating bulletin boards.
- keeping the library scrapbook current with pictures and clippings from newspapers.
- helping with post-processing of videos, DVD’s and other materials as needed.
- emptying the book and A/V drops as needed.
- answering phones.
- accurately shelving returned items that are on the book cart and keeping it emptied.
- Maintaining the shelves by straightening and shelf reading to be sure everything is in its proper place.
- learning the circulation system, checking items in and out for patrons.
- seeing that a high level of patron satisfaction is maintained. The library is tax supported, so be mindful that the members of the public are your employers.
- always greeting and acknowledging patrons as they come in. Be courteous.
- assisting other staff in any task as needed.
Physical Requirements: The person who fills this job must have -
- the ability to lift and carry loads of about 35 pounds and to carry these 100 feet several times in a three-hour period.
- the ability to stand for long periods without sitting.
- the ability to kneel, bend and stoop numerous times during a three-hour period.
- the ability to hear patrons speaking in a conversational voice and on the telephone.
- the ability to speak clearly and audibly.
Regular Hours: The person who fills this position must be flexible with scheduling. The schedule of this position will vary from week to week and month to month as deemed necessary to fulfill staffing requirements. The person hired for this position must be willing to work evenings and weekends and as needed for Summer Reading Program events and Story Time events.
Pay: This position earns $7.50 per hour, before standard deductions, with an approximate number of annual hours of 200-300. The Board of Trustees sets the per hour rate of all employees of the Meade Public Library. Based on budget concerns, the rate of pay is subject to change at any time without prior notice. New employees may start at a lower rate of pay than the listed per hour rate for this position with the opportunity for a merit raise after six (6) months of continuous employment.
Sick/Vacation Leave: This position does not earn sick and vacation leave; however, upon approval of the Director/Head Librarian, leave time without pay may be taken. This position does have time off for holidays, as outlined in the Meade Public Library Personnel Policy, and with the approval of the Director/Head Librarian regularly scheduled hours lost due to a holiday may be made up within the same pay period.
