JOB DESCRIPTION FOR LIBRARY DIRECTOR
JOB TITLE: Library
Director
REPORTS TO: Library
Board of Trustees
QUALIFICATIONS:
Individual must be a high school graduate. Some clerical business and
accounting experience preferred. Person must have the ability to work
well with adults as well as children. The qualified applicant should
have a positive, dynamic personality and be responsible. Ability to organize, supervise, plan and direct services
and programs of the library, work independently under the policies
established by the Library Board, make sound decisions, plan, prepare and
expend budgets and to communicate effectively. Knowledge of community
needs and interest in relation to library services and administration.
Have the ability to analyze library needs and evaluate library services.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the
Library Board, patrons, community leaders, personnel and community
organizations.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsibilities for monthly
board meetings:

Act as a technical advisor to
the Board.

Recommend needed policies or
policy changes for Board action.
-
Carry out the policies and
procedures as adopted by the Board.

Prepare agendas for board
meetings in consultation with the Board Chair and attend all board
meetings.

Prepare treasurer's report and
have payroll and warrant checks written for monthly expenses.

Mail or deliver the signed
checks to appropriate parties.
-
Present library activity
reports (Director's reports) and give a current report of expenditures
against the budget at each board meeting.

Assist the Board in the
preparation of the annual budget.
General responsibilities:
-
Hire, supervise and evaluate
library personnel, with authority to terminate if deemed necessary.

Responsible for the
selection and purchase of books and other library materials and supplies.

Responsible for overseeing
the care and maintenance of building and equipment.
-
Manage and participate in the
day-to-day activities of the library including, but not limited to,
assisting patrons, checking books and materials in and out, shelving
materials, operating computers and office equipment.

Ability to plan and accomplish
short-term and long-term goals.

Knowledgeable about local
and state laws relating to libraries. Keep the Board aware
of library related legislation. Actively support library legislation
in the local, state and federal governments.

Be prepared to carry-out and
fulfill all directives and requests from the Board.

See that the library scrapbook
is kept current with clippings from newspapers and photographs.

Strive to maintain an
atmosphere of positive service through adequate facilities, staff and
resources.

Publicize and promote library
activities and services.
-
Complete annual reports to the
Board, State and Southwest Kansas Library System and other reports as
required.

Prepare and have information
ready for the annual audit.

Participate in Southwest Kansas
Library System and State Library meetings and workshops to improve library
and local service. Attend SWKLS assembly and other meetings when
possible.

Ensure that the library
complies with requirements for State Aid, KanEd, E-Rate and the Extended
Service Grant from the SWKLS.

Represent Meade Public Library
and Meade County (if County Representative) by attending SWKLS meetings; make use of the services provided by the SWKLS
and the Kansas State Library.

Keep aware of current library
trends by participating in professional organizations and attending
continuing education activities provided by the SWKLS or other state-wide libraries.

Report regularly to the library
board and make presentations to the general public.

Send overdue notices to
patrons.

Maintain professional
appearance and attitude.
Technical Abilities:
-
Knowledge of office software.
Learn circulation system, time management program and other library
programs and software.

Ability to access the internet
and library data bases.
-
Familiarity with interlibrary
loan borrowing and loaning.

Do necessary maintenance for
circulation program and for library hardware.
-
Be familiar with process to
complete the cataloging for new books.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The person who fills this job
must have:
* the ability to lift and
carry loads of about 35 pounds and to carry these 100 feet several times in
a three hour period
* the ability to stand for
long periods with sitting
* the ability to kneel,
bend and stoop numerous times during a three-hour period
* the ability to hear
patrons speaking in a conversational voice and on the telephone
* the ability to speak
clearly and audibly
